Video Blog – Barking a Coyote to a Stop, Bad Shooting, & Anti-Hunter Comments
In this video blog Mark Healy attempts to bark a coyote to a stop with horrible results. We’ve analyzed the scenario and believe we know why the coyote hit the afterburners when he heard the bark. Take a look for yourselves and give us your thoughts.
We also take a few minutes to read a pair of reader comments from the dozens we’ve received over the last several weeks. We provide some insight, intellectual analysis, and a rebuttal to each based on professional consultation we solicited from outside the company.
We’ve all seen it before. A called coyote comes running in, the camera guy or the shooter need it to stop for a second or two, and someone barks. In the dozens of times I’ve done it, the coyote usually pauses just long enough to make a clean shot, or get some photos. Occasionally, like in this video, the coyote looks like he’s been poked with a cattle prod and getting any shot at the running dog is akin to skeet shooting.
If you click on the video a second time you can view it in full screen at YouTube.
We are always amazed and amused by the number of people who take time from their day to send us pointless personal attack emails. Now I know firsthand what Howard Stern meant when he said “Why don’t they just change the channel. No one is forced to listen to me”. Although, it would be nice to see a lib wing nut try to make a coherent argument rather than offering a simpleton death wish laced with profanity. If only…
As always, thank you for stopping in and adding value to the Wildlife Callers Blog! Better days in the field are what we’re all about. If this video makes a difference on your next hunt and you bag the coyote, we’ve achieved our goal.

My $.02 worth is he got some scent from the call or of the person who had been there to place the call. From what little I could see of the setup it was poor. The coyote had to much cover. The setup was to restricted, not enough visibility. I realize that ideal setups in the Senoran Desert can be few and far between. When a coyote can get within 25 yards of the caller scent gets to be a big problem. In my opinion cover scents are a waist of time. The setup plays a major role in success.
Having said that the theory of to low a bark might be a factor. Certainly worth keeping in mind.
Great to hear opinions.
Thanks for everyones efforts.
Kent
Kent,
The setup was pretty tight with brush, but it was the best thing we had in the draw we wanted to call. There was a TON of coyote sign on the two track road just west about 150 yards away. For whatever reason the coytoes were using this area & draw a lot. I’d never called in this spot before, and with all of the sign, we didn’t want to pass it up.
We were, of course, on a lion scouting & hunting trip and the coyote stand was a “just because” set up. Once I saw the brush we were going to be fighting, I would have grabbed a shotgun – which by the way would have been just the trick – I could have rolled that coyote like a burrito with my 12ga. However, it’s not legal to hunt lions with a shotgun, thus it was safe & secure at my house.
I believe you may be right about the scent. We talked about that briefly, but settled on the bark because of the timing and the way the coyote reaacts at the very moment I barked.
As always, thank you for stopping in and adding to the discussion.
Have a great night,
Mark Healy
Theory #2. This time of the year coyotes are especially territorial. This dog might have been trespassing.
Enjoy

Love the video- Keep pushing back whenever your detractors take cheap shots with anonymous e- mails. Hollow, nameless threats and their sniping only reinforces what we all know to be true about them; That they’re angry, humorless people who want to control the actions of others to support their own warped view of the world. You know…. democrats.
Mark,
You have got to stop watching Scooby Doo! Possibly the worst bark I’ve heard in 20 years……as a side note, I’ve never heard a good one. That was great! Wish I could’ve been there.
I would have been rolling around on the ground laughing and there would’ve been no doubt why that coyote was running.
Awesome! Nice work! Absolutely priceless
Matt
Yeah Matt – that was a pretty bad bark imitation.
There are oh so many reasons that coyote hit the gas. The thing is, that bad bark has paid dividends in the past. Who knows…
I think Kent is right about the trespassing coyote. The way the coyote drops his tail and runs, is similar to catching a teenager stealing gas out of your pickup. The reactions are darn near the same.
