Liberal Love Letters From Anti-Hunting Moonbats & Media Manipulated Stooges
We were recently interviewed by two Arizona news papers – The AZ East Valley Tribune and the Arizona Republic. One story generated mostly positive calls and emails, while the other generated several death threats. Yep, death threats. The contrast is worth examining.
What’s noteworthy here is not that the news stories are different – there will always be differences from reporter to reporter & editor to editor, and we realize “news” is written for the benefit of the paper and for profitable ad revenues. What’s most interesting, and somewhat fascinating, is the way some people can be so easily manipulated to homicidal hostility by an article that’s had no independent review.
When a reader takes the time to send me an email that reads:
Comment: “I’d F$#&ing shoot you in the head if I saw you in person. You filthy scumbag murderer of non-human life.”
It’s a safe bet this person has been, and is completely unaware they have been, manipulated. Remember, this person, armed with nothing more than an unverified story from a newspaper, has just suggested that he/she would commit murder to avenge the death of an animal that was legally hunted, humanely killed, and then consumed as food and preserved as a trophy.
There were several others emails & postcards like this. Not one of these windbags had the courage to identify themselves. These are the morons with “Keep Abortion Legal” and “Meat is Murder” bumper stickers juxtaposed on the back of their Honda hybrids.
You wonder, are people manipulated by the media? I’d say alarmingly so, but I’ve put the stories below for your review. You be the judge. We want to know what you think, please take a moment to comment after you read this!
The story by the East Valley Tribune has been on our blog for more than a week. You can see the blog post here: East Valley Trib/Wildlife Callers Blog. And you can see the full Tribune Article here: EV Trib Article.
The Tribune article had just a couple of small errors, and was written in a balanced manner. The reporter and the editor didn’t go out of their way to make it an inflammatory, anger inciting piece. We even asked our readers to thank the reporter Ed Taylor for his objective coverage of our story and the sport of predator hunting.
From that article we received one – that’s right, just one lonely piece of hate mail. That letter, albeit anti-hunting, contained no profanity. The writer was most concerned that we were killing endangered animals and thought we should be ashamed of ourselves. For the record, mountain lions are NOT endangered and with appropriate licenses are legal to hunt. Furthermore, we are not not ashamed of ourselves.
But then…
The Arizona Republic released their version of the story. I gave my interview to both reporters within a seven day time frame. Nothing changed and I gave both reporters the same information. Here is Republic reporter Astrid Galvan’s version: Arizona Republic Article.
Wow! What a difference in content, and what a difference Astrid’s wording (and most likely the editor too) had over the readers. We’ve enjoyed a slew of hate mail…er…uh…I mean Liberal Love Letters this week. The inaccuracies in her article are many, but I’ll just point out three major errors.
First:
The Republic originally reported that I “invented” the Mighty Atom caller. Someone must have called them out on that headline because that wording disappeared in a couple of days. The Mighty Atom was invented by and is produced by Wildlife Technologies in Manchester, New Hampshire. I NEVER said I invented the Mighty Atom – that headline was simply not true.
Second:
Galvan quotes me as saying, “Mountain lions were just a new challenge,” Healy said. “They’re just trophies. The last lion I shot is now a mountain lion rug in my house.”
Several of my thoughts and statements from the interview have been condensed to 24 total words and the word “just” is added twice, resulting in a sensational, callous statement. I’d call this a mild case of Yellow Journalism. Was it effective? Yes! The homicidal Liberal Love Letters poured in.
If you’d care to read a more accurate depiction of what I said, read the Tribune article.
Our company and hunters worldwide value and respect the animals we hunt, nature, the outdoors, and biodiversity that is managed for long term sustainability. Modern game managers have learned from the excesses of the past (e.g. the American Bison slaughter) and hunters value harvest limits based on scientific research & data. We at Wildlife Callers hunt ethically and within the game management harvest/kill objectives and laws of the areas we’re hunting.
Third:
Galvan states that I have called in 16 lions in a single year. If only it were so easy!
Let me be very clear: In a period of 4.5 hunting seasons we have called in 16 lions that we’ve seen. We do not count the lions that vocalize back at us and don’t come in, just the lions we actually see are counted. Because of a combination of bad shooting (yeah…it happens) and lions being as elusive as they are, a mere 3 of them have been shot and killed. It’s no shooting gallery out there.
Of course, this misprint makes it seem very easy to call and kill lions and the easily swayed suckers, Che Guevara T-shirt crowd, and low-hanging mental fruit jumped all over it.
A Final Note:
To Galvan’s credit she did convey that the Mighty Atom callers will call a variety of animals, and that they specifically will call mountian lions. She also conveyed that the ISE was hosting a predator calling panel at their Phoenix show. That ISE show and panel were huge successes, and we thank her for that coverage.
My knee-jerk reaction to this was to seek a retraction from the editor. Then I realized, the editor has a job that goes beyond the story. He must sell papers & drive web hits, or be without a job. Traditional media is now competing with the new online world, The New York Times print edition hovers near extinction, and humans the world over have been empowered by the blogosphere and social media. Some clever wording creates strong emotion, emotion creates controversy, and controversy creates web hits. As the beneficiary of some of these hits, I didn’t seek a retraction. Wildlife Callers remains very busy and the mouth-breathing letter writers have most likely forgotten about us.
As far as the Love Letter writers – we don’t respond to idiots and didn’t engage them. These are the kind of self-proclaimed enlightened people that have a “humane bug release jar” in their house for safe kitchen cockroach removal and the carnage of ten million bugs on the grille & windshield of their sticker-covered Subaru. We’d never have a sensible conversation with them.
Anyone who would threaten my life over my passion for hunting, should become familiar with the work of Randall Eaton Ph.D. True “diversity” requires education and knowledge beyond your own emotional opinions.
Major Point!!
There is a lesson here. There are people who claim the mantles of diversity and freedom, who’d take away your right to hunt and fish tomorrow if they could. And, they’d do it all on naked emotion. We need to support groups like SCI, the NRA, and other organizations that keep these people at bay.
Thank you again for reading our blog and supporting ethical hunting. We would love to hear what you think on this, go ahead and sound off in our comments section!

Good calling & hunting,

Mark,
You’ve taken the high road and are to be commended for it. So easy to react emotionally and sink to the level of the ignorant…
I think that Paper knew its target audience, and catered directly to them. Most of which are likely similar to the “upstanding citizen” pictured above with the bad comb-over… He (she? it?) armed with a deadly weapon from the silverware drawer, making threatening gestures into a webcam, in his (her? its?) mother’s attic, between video games and last weeks overdue homework assignment from the community college…
Ingnorant of wildlife management, wildlife ecology, population densities, interspecies interaction, intraspecies interaction… Oh, I dunno, Basic Human Decency?!?!? Nothing in their lives seems to work with the way things are around them, so they take to attacking their foes with cowardly words on a screen.
You never hear inflammatory feedback from decent and/or intellegent people.
I think that speaks volumes.
Enough said. Leave them to flop around in their own self-loathing.
Ignorance is at the root of their comments. If they realized the respect we have for the animals, they would at least begin to understand the conservation aspect of what we do. But like most liberals, they are far too close minded to even attempt to understand another’s point of view.
Absolutely fantastic article Mark! What a level headed, intelligent, fact filled, accurate response! Thanks for writing this (for all of our sakes), I will pass it on.
Great blog post, Mark.
You’ve got to love this new media. Why take on the old media on their terms when you’ve got your own electronic printing press right at your fingertips?
Keep up the good work.
Excellent piece. I cancelled my Az. REPUGNANT subscription several years ago just because of the liberalism it promotes and the yellow journalism it employs. I am elated that they are actually going broke because their subscriber base is going away doing the same.
Dan
What a great well written response. If you continue to get hate mail, you should start a new blog and archive the content. You could monetize it with ads.
I get so frustrated at the stupidity of the animal rights people. I first of all do not believe they are correct in labeling themselves as animal rights people. Much as the progressive left leaning liberal does, they alter the title to suit an agenda, though the title represents a lie. We, as hunters, are more concerned with proper management, care and the continuation of species than they will ever be. The rights animals have are the rights we provide them. We do this by helping to protect, manage, grow their numbers, care for their health by our efforts and fund the projects to assist their habitat, yes, and even harvest, eat and proudly display the fruits of our efforts. Harvest schedules are discussed, deliberated, analyzed and put to the public for input regarding the best management techniques for all by a very worthy and competent Arizona Game and Fish Department.
The articles written by the two respective papers were read by me earlier. I elected to read them once again, in a somewhat critical manner looking to FIND something that indicated what monsters we may have represented ourselves to be. I found nothing of the sort. Of course, I am biased. The hours I have spent in evaluating the hunting arena has shown me the remarkable FACTS of a healthier animal population, a growing and more prolific population in the midst of community growth, better habitat and on and on. Gee, perhaps my bias , as based on fact is skewed? Can the facts be wrong. Well I would submit, if the facts are in error then the population of our game species would be in the decline and not on the upswing. The wildlife community would be demonstrating illness not health. Yes, it saddens me to see and hear of humans so lost in an unintelligible stupor that the obvious is lost somewhere between there eyes, heart and brains. Bottom line is this. I have read the articles and Wildlife Callers, Mark Healy and the entire entourage of dedicated animal lovers and enthusiasts are right on target. May the organization continue to grow for the enjoyment of man and the proliferation of animals.
Hi to all of you followers of Wildlife Callers. I was sent the article “Liberal Love Letters” by a very good friend of mine and was asked to check it out. Of courseI did so and felt led to provide a short response. I realize folks with varying opinions will read this and I am trusting some would come to identify the facts with management efforts seeing that us hunters care more for a well rounded and effective management of species than a simple and hate filled comment to murder those of us that choose to engage in a lawful and rewarding endeavor.

Excellent article Mark! It’s hard to believe that some people would spend their time sending such threatening mail to someone they know almost nothing about.
Thanks for your well-thought out and level-headed response. It was interesting to see the two different articles. Change a few words and the meaning comes across completely differently.
If anyone wants to see some mountain lion video with some mountain lion facts in it, you can check it out on my youtube site.

Its the Arizona Repugnant. One of the reasons I dont buy it, or even look at it anymore.( their loss buy the way)
Mark,
I learned a long time ago, from a very wise man.
“you cant tell people who dont know, they dont know”
It is actually easier to talk to a cow in the middle of the range than to have a conversation with one of these people.
At least the cow will hear you. They wont even hear, let alone listen.
Living on raw emotion all the time will shorten your life in the long run.
Might be a good thing for some of these people!
And a FWIW….you can call far more than 16 lions in, in a year or season! Done it many times.
Steve
Steve –
Thanks for checking in and commenting. As far as 16 in a year…
We’re still working on it! Dave & I called 5 last season and thought we all that AND a bag of chips.
Have a great night,
Mark
Mark,
First, let me say that I appreciate the way you have responded in this post. I learned early on that if you hunt big game or predators there are going to be people that are not educated on the facts and will never understand hunting and the need for management. Here in Idaho we opened up our first wolf hunt and there are people out there that no matter what the facts are don’t believe in hunting and Wolf hunters are getting similiar threats. There are also a number of people that although they may not agree with game management can disagree in a respectful way. When I hear of threats to you all I can say is thank God for our Second Amendment!
Chris
Here is an interesting article regarding Mountain Lion culling http://www.wildlifemanagementinstitute.org/PDF/2-Culling%20Mountain%20Lions….pdf
Unfortunately for the anti’s, their position is untenable as it is based on faulty logic. On the one hand, they will defend abortion and the “rights” of the mother over that of the fetus but fail to extend that same right to the hunter over an animal. It is a classic case of relativism. According to them, each man is the measure of morality, and moral choice should not be imposed by government or its citizens. However, for some inexplicable reason, they, themselves, are impuned from their own charge. They want their form of relativism to be inforced on others but not yours on them. Your morality is not good enough. Your freedom and rights must be sacrificed, and their form of relativism reigns supreme. Untenable indeed!
Mark,
Well put. You are a 100% accurate in my eyes; you will never be able to have an intelligent conversation with these type of people. Steve put it plainly “You can’t tell people who don’t know, they don’t know”. There are many people in our society that embrace ignorance to defend an issue they have not educated themselves on. If ever there were a statement to sum up the intelligence of these ‘sheeple’ it would have to be a statement threatening the life of a human being for killing an animal. The fact that they don’t see the irony in that tells me a little about their thought process; or lack thereof. These are usually the same people that on one hand spit hateful rhetoric for the ethical taking of animals and on the other hand gorge on store bought meat. Ignorant of how that meat got onto their table.
On the issue of the media influencing people; it is alarming how malleable some people are. Some people do not think into the purpose of the main stream media and these news programs. As you said, they are about selling papers, gaining viewership and getting hits. The accuracy of the content and independence in the reporting is not the most important thing. In the end the media is entertainment. One cannot get a unbiased view of current events by turning on the news or reading the AZ Repugnant. I for one seek truth in all things. Sometimes the truth in unobtainable, but it is never obtainable with a closed mind and unwillingness to view the topic from both sides.

Hey guys,
Thank you one and all for taking the time to stop in and read our blog. It apparent from the comments on this topic that the educated folks are on our side of the argument.
We appreciate the professionalism displayed by our readers and the hunting community in general. The Liberal Old Guard Media will have a tough time making us look like a bunch of know-nothing hicks if we come out of the gates like this!
Best regards and good hunting!

Mark,
Just a simple THANK YOU… nuff said, keep up the good fight with intelligent rebuttal… Sure wish we could hunt Mt. loins here, instead they hunt us….. don’t ever give up your rights!!!
Mark,
One should not forget, that no one can change the mind of the belligerently ignorant. Nor can we inform the closed minded single cause fanatic. Their cause is the only cause. Keep up the good work.
Dan
Mark,
I have to commend you on taking the high road. The anti hunting movement feeds on rebuttal. Your starving them, congrats to you my friend.
-Brian
Beautifully written and well articulated. With respect to liberals, and keep in mind I have some experience with them, they profess a committment to diversity, provided you define it as a group of people who all look different but think exactly the same way. So there shouldn’t be much surprise in the reaction- Of course, these are the same folks who have the obligatory “Hate is not a family value” bumper sticker on the back of the rusty Subaru. You can find it right next to the “Kill Bush” sticker.
It all boils down to this:
“Ignorance feels just like knowledge, one doesn’t know what they do not know”.
The ignoramus hate letter writers simply have no clue what they have no clue about.
Great work Mark! Hoping to hunt a lion with you someday.
Unfortunately we live in a society that too often makes irrational decisions and comments based soley on emotions and not facts. Although there is nothing wrong with having different opinions, it should still be displayed in a respectful manner. Disagreeing is one thing, the idea of making murder threats towards someone because of those differences is completely ridiculous.
