New Mexico Mountain Lion – Called in Tularosa – By Danny Batastini
This mountain lion was taken by world champion predator caller Dusty Wood, the story of this hunt was sent to us by calling champ Danny Batastini.
This mountain lion was taken three years ago outside of Tularosa, New Mexico. The lion was called in and shot by my hunting partner, Dusty Wood, who was the world coyote calling champion in 2003. Dusty was a Fox Pro representative at the time and that is why the Fox Pro was next to the lion
The best part of the hunt is in its simplicity.
From Dusty’s home, he walked across the highway and across some railroad tracks and made a couple of brush stands. The first stand he drew a blank, the second stand he called in a couple coyotes but out of the corner of his eye he saw movement not far away (it was the lion). Using a fawn bleat, he lured the lion in and shot it with a .17 Remington. He walked back across the highway back to his house, hopped on his quad and went over to pick up the lion to bring back home.
All-in-all it was kind of an uneventful hunt, but a hunt to remember. No one ever forgets calling a cougar.
Good Hunting,
Danny Batastini

Wow! With a .17 rem? Where did he hit it and how far did it go after the shot? Thanks for the great story, Danny.
